Buffalo: A Pleasant Surprise for the Jacksonian Traveller III

Buffalo: A Pleasant Surprise for the Jacksonian Traveller (Part III)

12/24/99
We Jacksonians pride ourselves on our friendliness and hospitality. The folks in Buffalo, however, are at least as friendly, hospitable and helpful as Jacksonians--maybe even more so. One of the most pleasant places in Buffalo is the Anchor Bar, home of Buffalo Wings. Although I have to watch my fat intake, the opportunity to sample the original Buffalo Wings was a temptation too great to resist, and the meal was well worth the small dietary assault. The wings come in four grades of hotness: mild, medium, hot and suicidal. I ordered hot and got what would be regarded in Mississippi as medium. When I go back, I'll order suicidal.

At the conference I attended, we received a tourist information packet from The Greater Buffalo Convention & Visitors Bureau, containing a recipe for Buffalo chicken wings. Click here for the recipe.

Finally the natural scenery. No trip to Buffalo is complete without a trip to Niagara Falls. You can pay $50.00 for a guided tour from Buffalo, or you can catch a bus at the bus station and get the round trip for less than $10.00 and the bus puts you out just a couple of blocks from the falls. I took the bus and walked around the falls, both on the U.S. and the Canadian side. The falls are really spectacular and are worth the better part of a day. On the U.S. side, you can walk to the top of both Niagara and Horseshoe Falls, but the good photo spots are on the Canadian side.

And now, dear reader, our tour of Buffalo is ended. It's a nice place to visit, and from what my friends tell me, it's a great place to live. When I go back I plan to hear the Buffalo Philharmonic, to visit more museums and cultural attractions, to learn more about Frank Lloyd Wright, to become better acquainted with those folks up there that were so kind to me, and to eat another plate of chicken wings at the Anchor Bar.
